The licensed community radio station for Totnes & surrounding villages
Tuesday 12th June 2012
ICONIC TOTNES venue the Barrel House has been saved from closure by a local family that is determined to keep it "just as it always has been".
One of the most popular venues in Totnes has been bought by local woman Melissa Carter and her family.
Ms Carter told Totnes FM she was looking forward taking over, but had not yet confirmed a completion date.
"All the staff are staying on," said Ms Carter. "We are very much looking forward to joining the Barrel House family.
"It will be the same mix of food, café and entertainment run by a local family. As a family we have been visiting the Barrel House since Charlie opened it. We love the place as it is."
Local residents will also be pleased to hear Ms Carter has no intention of extending the opening hours beyond midnight.
"We have not made any requests for a extension of the license past midnight, and we are not planning to now or in the future," she said.
The news of the purchase will come as a relief to the Barrel House's fans, who have come to love it over the years.
The Barrel House has it's third new owner in three years.
The venue's 22-year lease went on sale for £110,000 in January, but it is not known how much Ms Carter agreed to pay to become the third owner of the Barrel House in three years. The accounts show the business turned over £305,613 for the year to 31st July 2011.
The Barrel House is believed to have been built in the early 19th Century as the Castle Hotel, originally spanning both buildings on either side. It is now an established café bar during the day, while, in the evenings, the nineteenth century ballroom is a popular venue for a host of events including music, cabaret, comedy, film & DJ nights, along with poetry evenings and special events with guest speakers.
