TOTNES residents for or against the proposed Costa Coffee in the town have until midnight tonight to submit their views to South Hams District Council before planners decide whether or not to approve plans by the global high street brand.
However, even if anti-Costa campaigners are successful in defeating the coffee chain, another battle looks set to begin immediately as another international business has its eyes on the premises.
Totnes FM has learned that optician chain Specsavers is waiting in the wings should Costa Coffee fail to succeed in securing change of use planning permission.
Specsavers is understood to have declared an interest last year, but Costa was initially considered the preferred option by landlords London & Western Holdings, which continue to refuse to consider local independent retailers or charity shops.
Campaigners against the Costa plans have 3,500 signatures on a petition they intend on submitting to the council today.
